Elaines, late.
If you have ever read any Stuart Wood’s, you know that this is how he starts every one of his books with Stone Barrington in it. That is an easy way for him to get started. I choose to believe that once he gets started, things start to flow. From there he finishes his book. That is probably why he has 34 novels written and I do not.
Are there things in your life that you want to DO, BE or HAVE and cannot figure out where to begin?
For instance, I have been contemplating starting an e-newsletter for the last 2 years. And I have some pretty valid excuses as to why this idea has not yet come to fruition. Too busy working with clients or networking to keep the pipeline filled . . .Too tired after working all day to “be creative”. . . Not having the perfect format for the newsletter . . . Sound familiar?
I am not saying that each client, networking, rest and thorough planning are not important. But in the words of Oprah, “here is what I know for sure” . . . . The main reason that I had not started my newsletter , is that I felt like it had to be PERFECT.
There it is . . . I said it . . . YES, I want it to be PERFECT! Let’s face it, on the average, people receive over 100 emails per day and typically A LOT of them are e-newsletters. The look and feel of mine has to be impeccable for people to want to read it.
What is this thing about perfect? “Being without defect or blemish, completely suited for a particular purpose or situation.”
These definitions from dictionary.com say a lot. I get stuck in things because I believe that they have to be right on—no blemishes—like my skin—not!
Where is perfection getting in the way of you making the impact that you want to make?
Here are a few perfection busting techniques that have helped me to get this project going . . .
1. Have a clear vision of what it is you want to accomplish and why.
This has to be something for you, not for anybody else. It must speak to what makes you tick and be in alignment with where you are heading. Having a newsletter is my way of sharing information that can move you towards being in Full Bloom. That is what gets me out of bed in the morning, knowing I am the spark that lights your fire. When I am in alignment with that , then “perfect” seems to subside a bit.
2. Once you have the vision, share it with someone else.
Share it with people who want you to have what you want. Surround yourself with supportive people who are not focused on “perfection,” but who think it is perfect that you are doing what you want to be doing. Their energy will keep you going by providing you with encouragement and accountability. Avoid nay-sayers and seek out others who believe in you.
3. Create a mind map or vision board of your desires. This is a mind dump. Get everything out of your head and on to paper. Do your best to not let the how’s get in your way. Let yourself dream and explore the possibillities. This is like “free writing” that you learned when you were young. The “how’s” and fine-tuning come later.
